Chinese welterweight Song Kenan had a good morning in Perth today, handing American Ricky Glenn his third straight loss and likely a pounding headache tomorrow.
The two fought on the second preliminary fight of UFC 305, which is unfolding from Perth, Australia at the RAC Arena.
The fight began with Ricky Glenn (22-9-2) pushing hard against Song Kenan (22-8) and dropping him with a left hook. Once to the mat, a scramble ensued that brought the two fighters back up to their feet. Ricky Glenn kept working that looping left hook. Glenn would then push Song against the cage to work for a takedown, but Song defended wisely and punished Glenn with a couple knees for his efforts.
Once back in the center of the of the cage, Song let his hands fly, tagging Glenn over and over as Glenn pushed forward with his head down. With two minutes left, it looked like Glenn could be in some serious trouble. However, Glenn leaned on his decades of cage experience to minimize the damage, moving in close to Song. He was able to get Song to the ground with a body lock, but unable to keep him down.
To end round one, the two exchanged in a striking battle with Song landing an uppercut and left hook, tagging Glenn hard.
Song opened round two with a massive head kick that grazed the top of Glenn’s head. He would later follow-up the head kick with a strong body kick to Glenn. Song continued to punish Glenn every time he moved forward, blasting him with a straight right hand and flurry of punches that damaged- but did not repel- his American opponent. With one minute and a half down in the second round, Glenn looked to be showing some visible damage around the eyes.
Glenn, undeterred, kept pressing in for the takedown on Song, who was easily able to avoid the shot and punish Glenn for his troubles. An enormous hematoma began to form on the right temple of Ricky Glenn, and the damage kept piling up courtesy of the hands of Song.
Round three started with Song likely far ahead on the scorecards and a large patch of Vaseline still on the hematoma of Glenn. Kenan pushed hard for the takedown to open the round, and drug Ricky to the mat. However, Glenn worked his way back up and then pushed for the takedown on Song.
Once back to their feet, Ricky Glenn kept throwing that left hand, connecting on the chin of Song, but eating a counter right hook in the process. A one-two combination from Song briefly seem to knock Glenn onto his heels, but the zombie mode was activated on Glenn to stay in the fight. For the rest of the fight, it was rinse-and-repeat: Glenn moved in close, Song responded with punches, knees, and elbows, accumulating a wide margin of damage over Glenn.
An anticlimactic pause came with twenty seconds left of the fight, as the referee trimmed a portion of Song's hand tape, while a doctor looked at Ricky Glenn. Once the action resumed, Song Kenan threw hands and elbows at of furious pace until the final horn.
The judges scored the fight 30-27, 30-26, and 29-28 for a unanimous win for Song.
In a post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier, Song credited his work with Beijing’s Black Tiger gym for the win.
